The Rehoboth Beach Police Department Criminal Investigative Unit is staffed by one full-time detective. He handles a caseload of crimes against persons such as sexual assaults, batteries, and robberies, along with property crimes such as burglary, auto theft, and fraud. The detective follows-up on crime reports taken by patrol officers that have workable leads or those that constitute part of an on-going crime series.

Once a suspect has been identified, and arrested, the detective works with the State Attorney General's Office in prosecuting the case. The detective is also responsible for establishing and maintaining a liaison with other law enforcement agencies.

The detective is also responsible for conducting pre-employment background investigations on police officer candidates. Constant attention to this important function allows our department to have confidence that we have screened and selected only the most highly qualified candidates to become police officers.
