* Get to a safe place and call police (911) or rape crisis (800) 262-9800

* DO NOT eat, drink, shower, or change clothing until you have been examined.

* Physical exams need to be completed within 72 hours.

Sexual assault is one of the most serious and fastest growing violent crimes in America. Over 500,000 women and 40,000 men reporting sexual assault annually in the United States. Sexual Assault is very often unreported and unrecognized. It has become known as the Silent-Violent epidemic.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH TO GET HELP QUICKLY.

As soon as an incident of sexual assault is reported in Sussex County, the Sexual Assault Response Team is dispatched to respond to the needs of the victim.

Treatment is offered for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV referrals are provided.

There is no charge to the victim for these services. They are billed to the Violent Crimes Compensation Board. Free treatment is available to all victims of sexual assault.

THE SEXUAL ASSAULT RESPONSE TEAM. (S.A.R.T.)

The S.A.R.T. consists of: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.)

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a registered nurse who is specially trained to provide comprehensive and compassionate care while assuring that all evidence is objectively collected, documented and represented in court.

A Law Enforcement Officer

A law enforcement officer with specialized training and experience in the area of sexual assault investigation.

Rape Crisis Contact

Specially trained victim advocate who has been trained to act as a support person for the victim throughout the interview, medical and forensic exam.

The Sexual Assault Response Team also coordinates the efforts of the attorney general's office, emergency physicians, primary care physicians, gynecologists and community referral agencies.
